Terry BrileyDr. Terry Briley
Professor
Dean


Terry teaches Old Testament and Hebrew courses. He currently serves as dean of the College of Bible and Ministry. He is also one of the pulpit ministers for the Natchez Trace Church of Christ and is involved with mission work in Brazil. Terry received his B.A. in Biblical Languages from Lipscomb in 1978. He received the M.Phil. (1986) and Ph.D. (1990) in Hebraic and Cognate Studies from Hebrew Union College. He has published a two-volume commentary on Isaiah for College Press and is one of the editors for their Old Testament commentary series. He and his wife, Teri, have two sons, Nathan and Daniel.

Mark BlackDr. Mark Black
Professor
Director, Hazelip School of Theology


Mark teaches Luke-Acts, Synoptic Gospels, New Testament Theology, Corinthians, New Testament Exegesis, and Biblical Ethics. He received his B.A. in Bible from Freed-Hardeman University, his M.A. and M.Th. from Harding University Graduate School of Religion, his Th.M. degree from Princeton Theological Seminary, and his Ph.D. from Emory University. He has ministered in Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Mark and his wife, Margo, have three daughters: Sara, Jessica, and Allison.

Lee CampDr. Lee Camp
Associate Professor


Lee currently teaches courses in Biblical Ethics, Faith and Culture, Theology of the Church, and Minor Prophets. He completed his undergrad studies at Lipscomb (B.A., 1989), and graduate studies at Abilene Christian University (M.A. in doctrinal studies, M.Div., 1993) and University of Notre Dame (M.A., 1997, and Ph.D., 1999, both in Moral Theology/ Christian ethics). He recently published his first book, Mere Discipleship: Radical Christianity in a Rebellious World, published by Brazos Press (2003). In addition to serving as faculty member, he is a Senior Faculty Fellow in the Center for International Peace and Justice at Lipscomb University. Lee has previously served as the pulpit minister for the Donelson Church of Christ in Nashville, and as youth minister for the Donmoyer Avenue Church of Christ in South Bend, Indiana. Lee and his wife, Laura, have three sons, Chandler, David, and Ben.

Phillip CampDr. Phillip Camp
Assistant Professor


Phillip teaches various Old Testament text courses, Critical Interpretation to the Bible, and Hebrew. He received his bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 1989, his Master of Arts in Religion degree from Lipscomb University in 1993, and his Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1996. Phillip earned his Ph.D at Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education. Phillip has served as campus minister for churches in Ithaca, NY, Nashville, TN, and Princeton, NJ. He currently serves as an associate minister at the Natchez Trace Church of Christ in Nashville. Ted CarruthDr. Ted Carruth
Professor


Ted began teaching Greek and New Testament courses at Lubbock Christian University in 1971. He joined the Lipscomb Bible faculty in 1976. Ted first attended Texas Tech University majoring in agriculture. After serving as National Vice-President of the Future Farmers of America he changed majors and attended Harding University (B.A. 1964). Ted completed graduate studies at Harding Graduate School of Religion (M.Th. 1966) and Baylor University (Ph.D. 1973). Ted continued language studies at the University of Hawaii. He has done post-doctoral studies at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Vanderbilt University. Since 1996 he has participated in five archaeological excavations in Jordan and has studied at the W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem. Ted has served as the pulpit minister for churches in Arkansas, Hawaii, Texas, Tennessee and Kentucky. Ted's wife is the late Trish Hodgson-Carruth, Kinesology Professor at Lipscomb. He has three daughters and four grandsons - a full backfield!

George GoldmanDr. George Goldman II

Chair of the Department of Bible and Ministry

George teaches courses in New Testament, Greek, and Faith & Culture. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Lipscomb University (1988, 1991), his M.Div. from Harding University Graduate School of Religion (1993), and his Ph.D. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (2002). Dr. Goldman is actively involved in leading a college ministry and attends Fourth Avenue Church of Christ in Franklin, Tennessee where he lives with his wife, Wendy, her two daughters, Shannon and Lauren, and their son Nathan.

David FleerDr. David Fleer
Professor


David's teaching focus is homiletics. Under his direction, Lipscomb University hosts the annual Conference on Preaching. For the past few years Fleer has served as advisory board chair for the Christian Scholars' Conference, which is currently hosted at Lipscomb University. From 1995 to 2007, Fleer was Professor of Religion and Communication at Rochester College, named Teacher of the Year (1996-1997) and Most Influential Professor (2003-2004) by his peers and students. He preaches and teaches in congregations in Michigan and Tennessee and across the country. During the last calendar year he preached for churches in 30 different communities and he regularly presents at conferences, seminars, and lectureships in the Churches of Christ. Fleer earned his B.A. in Education from Washington State University (1976), and M.Div. from ACU (1981), the D.Min. from Fuller Seminary (1987), an M.S. in Communication from Portland State University (1991), and the Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Washington (1995). David and Mae have been married for over 30 years and have three sons, Josh, Luke, and Nate. They are the proud grandparents of Levi David.

Gary HollowayDr. Gary Holloway
Professor


Gary is Ijams Professor of Bible and the Associate Director of the Center for Spiritual Renewal at Lipscomb University and preaches at the Natchez Trace Church in Nashville. Holding degrees from Freed-Hardeman, Harding, The University of Texas, and Emory University, he has written twenty-five books, including You Might Be Too Busy If..., Spiritual Practices for People in a Hurry from Leafwood Press as well as several volumes in the Meditative Commentary Series, also from Leafwood. He is married to Deb Rogers Holloway, who teaches theatre at Lipscomb.

Earl LavenderDr. Earl Lavender
Professor
Director of Missions


Earl teaches classes in missions, Spiritual Formation, Faith & Culture, and church history. He currently serves as the director of missions at Lipscomb. He completed his B.S. and M.A. at Lipscomb and his Ph.D. at St. Louis University. Earl has ministered in Italy, Illinois, and Tennessee. Earl and his wife, Rebecca, have three children: Rachel, Beth, and David, and one grandchild.

Steve ShermanSteve Sherman

Missionary in Residence


Steve is the Missionary in Residence at Lipscomb after living and working as a missionary in Guatemala and Belize for the last 22 years. He teaches courses in the Prison Epistles, Introduction to Missions, and Medical Missions. In addition to his teaching duties, Steve works at Otter Creek Church of Christ in the areas of missions and functions as an advisor in the Single Adult Ministry. Steve graduated from Harding University in 1975 with a Bachelors degree and received his Masters degree from Harding Graduate School of Religion in 1983. He and his wife, Magda, have three daughters: Lisa, Sara, and Amy.

Walter SurdackiDr. Walter Surdacki
Assistant Professor


Walter teaches various Youth Ministry and practical ministry courses.  He completed his undergrad studies at the Institute for Christian Studies (B.A., 1990), and graduate studies at Pepperdine University (M.S. in Ministry, 1992) and Fuller Theological Seminary (M.Div., 1996 and D.Min. in Youth and Family Ministry, 2006). He has served in full time ministry for over 16 years working at the Torrance Church of Christ, Malibu Church of Christ and Campbell Church of Christ. Walter and his wife, Amy, have two daughters, Madeline and Abby.

Mike WilliamsDr. Mike Williams

Mike graduated from the University of Arizona with a bachelor's degree in 1986. He graduated from Abilene Christian University with a M. Div. in 1991. He holds the doctorate in New Testament from Emory University. Mike teaches freshman Bible, New Testament text courses, and Greek. He serves as Senior Minister at the Fourth Avenue Church of Christ in Franklin, Tennessee. Mike and his wife, Tania, have two children, Jeremy and Rachel.

John York Dr. John York
Professor


John teaches preaching classes and New Testament text classes for graduates and undergraduates. He received his training from Abilene Christian University (B.A. M.A., M.Div.) and Emory University (Ph.D., 1989). Prior to joining the Lipscomb faculty, John served in full time ministry with congregations in Oregon, Texas, and Tennessee. He also taught at Columbia Christian College (now Cascade College) for seven years. He is a frequent speaker on college lecture programs and sermon seminars. John and his wife, Anne, have two sons, Matt (Lipscomb University '03) and Brad (Abilene Christian University '05). They also have two grandchildren.
